Where
did Plenty Coups live and hunt? Crow Indian stories describe how the
people migrated great distances in war parties and to hunt. Some stories even
suggest that the Crow Indian people traveled far north to Alaska and far south
into the area where the Navajo Indian people lived. Many of the Crow Indian
people believe they originated in the Pryor area, and that is where they maintained
their communities. There are stories, however, of the large area that they covered
in war parties and to hunt. Plenty Coups himself related stories about going on
a war party where the ground was covered in white, and it was so cold that if
a man spit or got off his horse to relieve himself after riding all day everything
froze. People took this place to be Alaska.
They told of migrating from
Missouri through the plains, to Canada and north to the big river, which is the
west end of the Americas, and south to the dry lands, where they encountered the
Navajos. There are stories from what back before we can remember that my grandfather
and my father still tell us today. These stories tell of the migrations of powerful
men, gods and such. Just like the history of the Greeks, I guess. From: Chief Plenty Coups State Park Museum Tour Content
